In 1937, a clash occurred between the obverse and reverse dies at the Denver Mint. To remove the clash marks, a mint worker over-polished the reverse die, inadvertently erasing the buffalo's front right leg. Only the bottom of the hoof remains visible. An estimated 10,000 coins survive today.
