The Lincoln Cent (commonly called the Lincoln Penny,
was first minted in 1909 to commemorate the 100th
anniversary of the birth of President Lincoln. The coin was
designed by Victor D. Brenner, whose initials appear on
the reverse side of a limited number of Cents
manufactured in 1909.

Lincoln Cents were minted with the "Wheat" reverse for
the first 50 years, from 1909 to 1958. These cents are
commonly called Wheat Cents. Lincoln Cents began to be
minted with the "Memorial" reverse in 1959, the 150th
anniversary of Lincoln's birth. These cents are commonly
called Memorial Cents.

The most famous Lincoln Cent is the 1909-S VDB, which is
a wheat cent that was minted in San Francisco in 1909.
This variety of the 1909-S Lincoln Cent has the designer's
initials (VDB) on the bottom of the reverse of the coin.

Another fairly well known variety of the Lincoln Wheat
Cent is the one minted in 1943, during World War II. The
1943 Lincoln Cents have a Steel core and are coated with
Zinc. This was done due to a shortage of Copper during
the war. These cents are silver/gray in color rather than
red/orange/brown copper colors.
